Steve Walker

Steve Walker, “old Texas” to the bone, a horseman, hunter, fisherman, naturalist, writer, and the beloved outdoor storyteller of the Rio Grande Valley, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on August 7, 2026, at the age of 78.

For eleven years he welcomed South Texas into the wild country he loved through his shows Border Outdoors and Vámonos with Steve Walker. He was a tireless protector of wildlife, from the Sierra of Mexico to the red-crowned parrots of Brownsville, the city bird he helped protect.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Steve’s honor may be made to the Gladys Porter Zoo, Sabal Palm Sanctuary, Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Sea Turtle, Inc., or the Valley Land Fund.
